PEARL DISTRICT FAMILY HOUSING PROJECT
3RD YEAR STUDIO - ARCHITECTURE
HAND RENDERED USING MARKERS, PENS, AND TRACE PAPER

The criteria for this project included on-site evaluation for a multi-family housing unit in the Pearl district of Portland Oregon. As a class, we evaluated an undeveloped site by photographing the four surrounding streets, evaluated the cultural environment, and developed an urban schematic of all the surrounding buildings. We were then individually tasked with creating a space that would seamlessly integrate within the surrounding area for multiple family residence. My approach towards the initial design was to  completely isolate individuals from the heavily trafficked streets surrounding the property. I then integrated a geometric courtyard with sufficient foliage to create a sense of space and available circulation that wouldn't interfere with the privacy of the surrounding units. The site is elevated by a three foot concrete slab to accentuate privacy and security from the surrounding atmosphere. Decks and balconies overlook the surrounding landscape and water features creating a microcosm of place and belonging. Wood, glass, and stone slab are all integrated materials that are used to fit the portfolio of the urban environment. Below is an outline included with a 3D rendition of the units using alcoholic markers and colored pencils, as well as a floorplan of the overall space.
